El día de los muertos
Spanish students are learning about el Día de los Muertos, day of the dead, which is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd in central and southern Mexico. Students bring in artifacts and pictures of their loved ones who have passed and contribute to the altar, la ofrenda, set up in the classroom. Also on the altar is pan de muerto, bread of the dead, and el mole, a spiced chocolate sauce typically eaten with chicken or turkey. Students also learned that some people celebrating Día de los Muertos eat los chapulines, grasshoppers, and calaveras de azúcar, sugar skulls. Students also learned that instead of mourning their loved ones, Mexicans celebrate their life. They believe that when someone dies, they are just beginning their next stage of life.

La visita de Padre Tonio de Tenejapas, Chiapas
We had a fun time with Padre Tonio who spoke to us about the living conditions in Chiapas and the new Medical Clinic St Peter and Paul Parish is helping them build. As a Spanish class we are helping to fundraise for the clinic. ---Beatriz & Silvia

¡Comenzamos!
¡Bienvenidos al año escolar 2014-2015!
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!
In First grade we started out with the "Hola Hola Cómo estás" song and the Sign of the Cross prayer. They did a great job! Now we are learning how to respond to the question ¿Cómo estás? They are learning Estoy bien. ( thumbs up) Estoy mal. ( thumbs down) and Estoy así así. ( so-so hand movement). We also started our Buenos días song! Father Dennis walked in and visited so we sang it for him. They were so proud!
In 2nd grade, we have been reviewing, reviewing and reviewing! We practice our numbers up to 20 by playing the game Veinte. They love it! Plus, we have been talking about the weather outside. We will be starting our clothing unit on Monday.
